Best Day Trip from Sydney: Discover the 8-Shaped Pools

A Day at Figure Eight Pools: Tips for an Unforgettable Journey

One of my favorite day trips from Sydney has to be a visit to the Figure Eight Pools. I remember seeing this place on Facebook when I was little, so when I found out I was going on exchange to Australia, I researched everything I could to make sure I didn’t miss visiting this iconic spot. During my six months living in Sydney, I had the opportunity to visit this unique spot twice, each experience distinct and memorable. Here are some tips based on my adventures to help make your trip just as special.

Preparation and Route

The hike to the Figure Eight Pools is a 6km trek one-way, classified as medium to hard due to the steep terrain and remote setting. It’s crucial to time your trip well; the hike takes about 2 hours each way. Most importantly, plan to arrive during low tide; on my second visit, we underestimated the tide and were surprised by large waves. Before you set out, study the map carefully and dress appropriately. Flip-flops or unsuitable footwear won’t cut it here. Wear proper hiking shoes, and consider bringing walking sticks if needed. Never underestimate the importance of carrying enough water. On my first trip, we ran out and were fortunate to encounter a friendly hiker who shared his water with us. Also, pack plenty of snacks to keep your energy up throughout the hike.

Safety Tips

Try to reach the pools before midday. No one wants to trek back up the hill in the dark, and remember, the park gates close at 8:30 p.m. The terrain is steep and uneven, which makes it unsuitable for young children. This location is in a remote area of the park, and there are no nearby rescue services. In case of an emergency, and if you have coverage, call Triple Zero (000). Doing thorough research paid off, as being unprepared can lead to accidents.

Arrival and Parking

You can park at Garawarra Farm carpark, located in the Garie area of the Royal National Park, just off Garie Road. From there, follow the signs leading down to Burning Palms Beach, where you’ll descend to the beach with spectacular views. If you’re lucky, you might even spot wallabies along the way. Once you reach the beach, you’ll need to carefully navigate the rocky area.

For transportation, renting a car through Pop Car was an easy and cost-effective solution for managing the logistics of this excursion. Just make sure to download the app, create a profile, and register your license beforehand.

Exploring the Surroundings

If you have extra time after visiting the pools, I highly recommend catching the sunset at Cronulla Beach. It’s only a 30-minute drive from the Garawarra parking lot, a small detour on your way back to Sydney, but definitely worth it. After visiting the pools both times, we took the opportunity to have lunch in the area, then explored the Cronulla Sand Dunes, just a 20 minute walk from the parking lot. We ended our day relaxing on the beach, soaking in the view until sunset, a perfect way to finish the adventure.
