Why I Recommend Student Housing for Exchange Students

Deciding to move halfway across the world for my exchange semester in Australia was a big decision, and figuring out where to live was one of the hardest parts. In the end, budget played a big role in my choice to stay in student housing, but looking back, there were so many more reasons why it was the best decision I could have made.

Living in the Queen Mary Building  was both challenging and rewarding. Sharing a space with 4,000 students from all over the world forced me out of my comfort zone and into a completely new social dynamic. It wasn’t always easy, especially when dealing with a packed, not-so-clean kitchen, but those everyday moments turned into opportunities to meet people, share stories, and build friendships. Some of my closest connections were formed over late-night cooking sessions or a few beers in the Lower Ground and rooftop, with people from places like Iceland, Japan, Norway, Italy, and Spain.

One of the best parts of student housing was never feeling alone. There was always something happening, whether it was “Game of Thrones” nights on Tuesdays, casual meet-ups in the LG, or study sessions on the rooftop. These moments made the experience what it was, and the rooftop, with its incredible city views, became a place where we all gathered to unwind, talk for hours, and make memories that still feel vivid today.

Of course, living in such close quarters wasn’t without its challenges: navigating chaotic kitchen scenes, managing laundry in shared facilities, queuing for bathrooms, and coping with cramped living spaces. However, these challenges were integral to the student housing experience and provided valuable lessons in patience and adaptability.

Choosing to live in student housing isn’t just a practical decision; it’s a transformative opportunity for personal and social growth, especially as an exchange student, when your time is typically limited to just six months. The friendships forged and life skills acquired in such a vibrant and diverse setting are truly invaluable. If you have the opportunity to live in student accommodation, I wholeheartedly recommend embracing it. It’s an unparalleled chance to expand your horizons and forge connections that can last a lifetime.
